Long before Islam, Christian Arabs were already fully involved in the political, religious and cultural world of the Middle East. The South would thus become the main field of evaluation of Lebanese commitments by foreign partners.

Dory Chamoun, a former Chouf MP and former President of the National Liberal Party, died on Monday 14 September 2026 in Lebanon at the age of 94. Son of the former President of the Republic Camille Chamoun and brother of Dany Chamoun, he had led for several decades the political formation founded by his father. Former president of the municipality of Deir el-Qamar, he had also sat in Parliament from 2009 to 2018. The terms of his funeral are expected after the announcement of his death.

Since 2019, the Lebanese economy has suffered a historic collapse. Nominal GDP rose from $51.6 billion in 2019 to $20.1 billion in 2023 before rising, but this increase does not mean a return to production. Real GDP, which corrects price effects, shows a cumulative contraction of almost 40% compared to 2018. After a rebound in 2025, the war plunged the economy into recession in 2026.

Lebanon's bank restructuring depends on an unsolved bank-by-bank question: how much are the assets on the balance sheets actually worth? He was interrogated and his phone seized before he could leave. The municipality denied on Sunday the first reports of his arrest. The incident, however, raises the question of the practical exercise of Lebanese sovereignty in areas subject to Israeli incursions.
