On Friday, 18 September, the Lebanese Armed Forces declined from a newly established position on the outskirts of Deir Mimas following the advance of Israeli forces. Two tanks approached the device, while six deafening grenades were thrown into the area. Israeli forces then searched several houses before returning to Tall al-Nahhas. The incident directly raises the question of the ability of the Lebanese army to take effective control of the South at a time when the disarmament of Hezbollah and Israeli withdrawal are at the centre of political commitments.

President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam provided an update Friday, September 18, on several diplomatic and internal deadlines in Lebanon. The situation in the South, the results of the Paris meetings, the preparations for the international conference in support of the army and the Internal Security Forces and the forthcoming UN General Assembly dominated their maintenance. The two officials also referred to a meeting planned in Washington and to further consideration of the 2027 budget.
